Gym Squad display at the Abbey Fete, July 1933

Photographs of the School Gym Squad dating from 1920 to 1970 are now available online.

Notable former members of the School Gym Squad include Christopher Chataway (1947 & 1948 Gym Squad) who went on to become a record-breaking athlete and set the pace for Roger Bannister’s sub-four minute mile.  Another member, John Cordingley (1933 & 1934 Gym Squad), would later command the British Army’s first nuclear missile regiment, but in 1933 he took part in a Gym Squad display in the garden of the Digby.  The boys marched out to the band of the 2nd Battalion the Dorset Regiment playing ‘There’s Something about a Solider’ and, under Max Westlake’s watchful eye, performed on the parallel bars, springboard, and horse.

Evidence that being a member of the School Gym Squad was not always a safe option can be seen in the Gym Squad photograph for 1961 in which poor Jon Grayburn has his arm in plaster!
