Miss Young (‘Mrs Gay’), Matron of the San 1899-1902, 1912-1924.

International Women’s Day 2018 celebrates the achievements of women in all walks of life.  Today, we honour the unsung heroines of the School Sanatorium – the women who for over 130 years have cared for the boys of Sherborne School.

When one Matron of the San retired in 1924, the following tribute was paid to her:

‘It is pleasing to think that in all walks of life there are some whose duties may not be spectacular, though they are of the utmost importance, who can, and do, thoroughly identify themselves with the smallest interests of the whole community.’
