Charles Oliver was born on 20th August, 1933, he attended the Royal Agricultural College Cirencester and later became a farmer in Hothfield, Kent and did his National Service as a 2nd Lieutenant in The Buffs.

He was a much loved and admired local figure who had been, in his time, a Borough Councillor for 12 years, Chairman of Kent Council for the Protection of Rural England, Chairman of Kent Historic Churches and a Church Warden. Such was the affection and esteem all felt, who knew him, that almost 400 attended his Thanksgiving Service, including a number of past High Sheriffs, Deputy Lieutenants, Mayors & ex-Mayors plus at least 6 Old Shirburnians. His love of his old school was evident for the Service included a recording of the School’s “Carmen”.

He died on 2nd June 2014 and leaves a wife, Jane (nee Tidy) and a daughter, Hattie.
