On 19 July 1917, the London publishing firm Grant Richards published Alec Waugh’s first novel, The Loom of Youth. The novel, which went on to become a best-seller, caused a great controversy at Sherborne School, with the result that Alec and his father resigned from the Old Shirburnian Society (they were not reinstated until 1933) and Alec’s brother Evelyn Waugh was sent to Lancing College rather than Sherborne School.
