Many OS served with the Devonshire Regiment and the Dorset Regiment both before and after the Regiments amalgamated in 1958. Indeed, nearly every OS would have worn the regimental cap badge during his time in the School the CCF.
The Regiments were far more than military units. The fabric of the Devon and Dorset community was interwoven into the lives of their families, many of whom were to suffer the ultimate sacrifice, especially in the two world wars.
We are therefore very proud that a memorial to the regiments is to be unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield in the autumn of 2017. It has been designed by the internationally-recognized sculptor, Vivienne Mallock and depicts soldiers from the regiments engaged at the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Kohima and in Northern Ireland.
The cost of the memorial is approximately £140,000 and is being met by donations from individuals and organisations with connections to the regiments. If any Old Shirburnians wish to find out more about the project, please visit the Regiments website Devon and Dorset Regiments where there is also a Virgin Money giving link (Devon and Dorsets Memorial Appeal) should you wish to contribute.
