Ian Peter Windle, Another World: The Life of William Windle 1818-1899.
When William Windle was ordained priest in 1850, to serve as curate at St Mary’s, Putney, in London, he went to Bishopthorpe Palace in York for his ordination. After serving as Vicar of Kirtling, near Newmarket, he was appointed Rector of St Stephen Walbrook, in the City of London — his brother-in-law was Master of the Grocers’ Company, which held the patronage. Just as Windle had gone to the residence of the Archbishop of York to be ordained, so, in 1861, he had to go to the House of Lords for his institution as Bishop of London.
Windle’s great-grandson has written this book based on the prelate’s diaries. They record the hectic life of the Rector, with much travel by railway and (when visiting East Anglia) by steamer. He even commuted for 38 years from the suburbs to the City — not so different a world, then.
