Sherborne School has a proud Olympic heritage dating back to the Games of the IV Olympiad in 1908.
To date, seven Olympic medals have been won by Shirburnians and members of staff – one gold medal, one silver medal, and five bronze medals.
Top of the medal table is School House with one gold and three bronze medals, second is Abbey House with one silver medal, and third is Lyon House with two bronze medals.
Chris Chataway (Harper House 44-49), who represented GB in the Men’s 5,000 metres at both the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Games, wrote in 1952 that ‘The Olympic Games provide a pitch of sustained excitement that one does not reach very often. One could hardly doubt that they are now the world’s greatest sporting event, and to be a part of them, however small, was a great experience’, adding that ‘the winning of gold medals involves a good deal of luck, and provides no suitable criterion of success at an Olympic Games.’
