Two new exhibitions in Dorchester and Kew have OS connections.
A new exhibition at the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery in Dorchester features the work of sculptor Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930-1993) Elisabeth Frink: A View from Within – Dorset Museum
Elizabeth Frink’s family had strong links to Sherborne School and in particular to Abbey House where both her father Herbert Frink (Abbey House 1913-1917) and her grandfather Frederick Frink (Abbey House 1881-1886) boarded. The ‘Great Escapes: Remarkable Second War Captives’ exhibition at the National Archives in Kew tells the stories of some of the escape attempts made by prisoners of war from Colditz Castle and the Stalag Luft III POW camp Great Escapes – Remarkable Second World War Captives – The National Archives
The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III, which was later immortalised in the 1963 film starring Steve McQueen, included 21-year-old Shirburnian Tony Bethell (Harper House 1936-1941) who was the youngest man to escape on 24 March 1944 through ‘Harry’ tunnel.
